The Akagera National park derives its name from the Akagera river located inside the park. The park is 1,112 square meters big and was gazetted in 1934 and opened up for tourism in 1997.

Akagera National park lays in the savannah, woodland, wetland and surrounded by a dozen lakes and swamps. This is where the park derives its beauty and uniqueness from exceptional levels of biodeversity.

How to get there/ reach Volcanoes N.P

By Road

This is the most common type of transportation to the park and it will take you approximately 2.5 hrs from Kigali city. We recommend you use a 4×4 Vehicle and this ranges from Us dollars $200-$350 per day minus drivers’ allowance.

By AIR

You can reach the park through chartered flights by helicopter by Akagera Aviation and it will take you approximately 22 minutes to reach Akagera National Park.

Best time to Visit

We recommend the dry months of December- January and June-August where there is a high volume of wildlife in the reserveAlthough you can visit in other months when it’s a wet season April and November with low numbers of wildlife.
